Shifter is an explicit adult supernatural romance/erotic thriller that’s relatively well written but contains elements that are a bit too similar to television’s True Blood (such as the people who like vampires being called Fang Bangers).
Having heard the first four stories in this six-episode tale, it weaves an interesting who’ll-do-it tale that plays on the fantasy of having two people fight over you. In this instance however, the men fight over the female lead for sex. The dubious setup prevents her from just being a piece of meat however, because it’s only through sex that her life can be saved as her body transitions into something new!
Tamara Rose Blodgett and Marata Eros make a good writing team and provide enough intrigue to keep the story interesting across the multiple episodes.
Narrator Holly Elise does a fine job, however this is one book that could have benefited more from a male reader. The reason for this is that the story unfolds through the first-person view of multiple characters. We learn immediately that the main character is female, but it’s almost an hour into the book before we discover the second perspective is being told by a male. By then I’d incorrectly assumed I was listening to a lesbian love story! Now that’s cleared up, I’m keen to see how it develops up over the coming volumes.
